knyom jol-jet plie chur. i love fresh fruit.
besides the usual bananas, watermelon, mangos, and papayas (which are anything but ordinary: bananas come in three kinds in varying grades of sweetness and green/yellow, watermelons are small but juicy, and mangos and papayas -- well, they are in a whole other category than any previous experience of tropical-fruits-shipped-halfway-up-the-continent-in-boxes-to-be-eaten-two-weeks-later i have ever had nor ever fully describe in words)... there are fruits here i never new existed and love with all my heart. Let me introduce:
Mornkoot (Mangosteen) -- woody brownish purplish outside (that sometimes stains your fingers pink like pomegranate juice) peels away to sweet soft white sections of juicy fruit. Looks like a garlic clove inside but tastes anything like it -- so delicious! Wins for most creative packaging.
Mien (Longan) -- the best things come in small packages, in this case small quarter-sized balls that look like baby potatoes and peel away to juicy white flesh (similar to sow mow but doesn't require dental floss) with the smoothest dark brown seed inside. Resembles a sea urchin, tastes like candy.

Let me introduce:
(Custard Apple) -- looks like a dragon-skinned tennis ball, peels a bit like a mandarin orange, with sweet bartlett-pear-like white flesh, honeycombed inside with black seeds a bit bigger and denser than watermelon seeds... These just came into season so they're a bit of a novelty and I'm eating them in large quantities.
Sow Mow (Rambutan) -- prickly looking outside, smooth white ball of sweet densely textured flesh, wrapped around an almond-shaped seed on the inside. Sometimes it takes some work to get the fruit off the seed, in which case flossing may be required.
(Dragon Fruit) -- either white or magenta flesh with small black seeds, very similar to a kiwi but bigger and mildly sweet rather than tangy. Juicy and refreshing, a staple any-day fruit.

Wheres the durian?
ReplyDeletethe title is "fruit favorites"... maybe i'll do a "strange fruits" post and add that one in there. durian does deserve a blog post, just not this one!
