Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the US, and what started as a Facebook post is now a litany of ideas that keep coming to me late at night in bed...which makes me think they need their own blog post.
People wonder: How can I get engaged in the fight against human trafficking?? Important question, especially when the issue is so broad, global, and complex. But every little bit counts. Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling...hopefully you'll lay in bed at night adding to this list in your own head. And implement one or more into your life in 2012.
1. Strike up a conversation about trafficking with a stranger in the grocery store line.
2. Start volunteering with kids in an after-school program or become a youth mentor.
3. Talk about the rampant problem of porn addiction ...in church! Or ask your pastor to. (Yes, it's very much related)
4. Research US prostitution laws and be disturbed.
5. Pick one thing, like chocolate, and only buy it fair trade all year (or at least stop buying Hershey's!)
6. Give money to a reputable (key word) anti-trafficking organization.
7. Promise me that if the only movie you've ever watched about trafficking is Taken that you'll watch another one.
8. When you consider who to vote for, PLEASE add trafficking to the list of hot button topics that you want to hear candidates talking about besides abortion and taxes...
9. Google 'GTIP'
10. Pray for the girls I'll be working with this year at Transitions!
11. Or...Consider packing your bags and moving overseas! It's fun, I promise! ;)
Do something brave for the 27 million in slavery.
Any other ideas? What will you do in 2012 to fight trafficking?
